How to Unclog Toilet Rim Jets

Toilet Rim Jets Toilet Rim Jets

When all else fails, Farmhouse Magic Blog does occasionally have to call in a plumber for repairs.

My tenant had an usual complaint in that he said the toilet no longer had a loud “Shoosh” sound when he flushed it.

I went over and checked out the top part of the toilet and everything looked fine and the toilet flushed without a problem.

I eventually did call in a plumber to repair a leaking bathtub faucet and had him look at the toilet.

Well the plumber stated the toilet jets were clogged.  What’s a toilet jet, right?  This was something I never heard of.

I researched the topic a little and found out that your can find the toilet jets under the rim of the toilet.  If you use a hand mirror, you can easily see them.

Water from the tank flows down into the bowl to start the flush cycle.  The toilet jets makes the water flow in a circular pattern.

Sometimes sediment or lime blocks the toilet jet openings.

An easy way to unclog a toilet jet is to cut a wire hanger apart and use the end to gently poke in the rim jets and unclog them.

With any plumber repair remember “easy does it”.  You don’t want to press so hard that you damage or crack the toilet.

So next time a toilet doesn’t go “Swoosh”, I’ll know what to do.

  1. I checked my toilet jets after reading your blog. I took the cotton off a Q-tip and pushed the stick into the openings. I did notice some dirt and discoloration on the stick. I think I did get a better flush afterwards. Thanks.
