How to Care For Holiday Christmas Greenery

The thing I love about the Christmas holiday is the crisp smell of fresh pine and rosemary greenery.

Today I stopped in Lowes and Merrifeld Garden Center to check out their fresh greenery.

Freshly cut greenery, once displayed, lasts about two weeks in your home and perhaps a little longer if displayed outside.

The photograph of the above Victorian kissing balls are made with pine, and decorated with mini pine cones.  A red hanging ribbon is attached to each kissing ball.

There are also mini pine trees in tins along with rosemary herbs trimmed into a tree shape.

How to Care for Fresh Greenery

  1. If you are making your holiday swags or table decorations, be sure to soak the greenery first in warm water.  If that is not possible, place the ends in warm water before making.
  2. When the display is finished, spray with anti-desiccant spray to seal in moisture.  I use Wilt-Pruf spray.
  3. Keep your greenery away from heat sources such as vents and direct sunlight.
  4. Mist greenery every day or two.

Poinsettia Trees

Although not technically greenery, I thought I would include the below photographs of these unique poinsettia trees.

The poinsettia plants are trained and trimmed to look like small trees.

It’s a fresh idea which I haven’t seen before.

The poinsettia trees costs about $80 each at Merrifield Gardens.
