Herndon’s First Church, cir. 1872

It was a cold but bright fall day and I decided to take a drive to downtown Herndon.

I stopped and got out of the car to look at the first church in Herndon which was built in 1872.

By 1915, there were a total of six churches in Herndon.

After being at this Eldon Street location for 67 years, the congregation from this church merged with the South Methodist Episcopal Church on Spring Street.

The building then became an American Legion Post and then a warehouse.

This photograph shows the front of the white church with the red bricks leading up to the double doors.

The maple tree out front allows the shadows of leaves to dot the front of the church.

In 1976, the building converted back into a church.

The sign out front states it is currently the Church of Jesus Christ, the Pure Gospel.

There is a Herndon historical marker out front to mark the church.

I like to think about all the weddings and happy times this church has seen, the ticking by of time and its hopes for the future.
