The photographs taken for today’s blog are of Mexican or Aztec Marigold flowers (tagetes erecta).

This mounding plant is native to Mexico.  In particular, you will find Mexican Marigolds growing wild in the states of Mexico, Michoacan, Puebla, and Veracruz.

Mexican Marigold flowers and plants have a distinct “herb-like” aroma.

The flowers have a bright yellow flower which will bloom in spring, summer and fall.

Fun Facts

Marigolds are easy to grow and need full sun to bloom.  Pinch off faded flowers to get more blooms.

Marigold flowers are deer resistant.

Marigolds are sometimes added to commercial chicken feed.  The flowers contain the pigment xanthophyll which gives the chicken egg yolks a darker appearance.

NOTE:  Interestingly enough, the attention tag on these marigolds states they are not for human or animal consumption.
