Golden Kiwi Fruit

Golden Kiwi Fruit

Yesterday while shopping, the Golden Kiwi Fruit, (Sun Gold), was on sale, so I purchased a package.

By checking the grower’s website, I found quite a bit of information on this fruit and noted the fruit was grown in New Zealand.

First of all, the nutritious fruit has three times more Vitamin C than oranges, has fiber, and is low fat.

Today is a good day to make a fresh fruit, vegetable and herb salad for lunch.

The lettuce is super fresh as it came from my garden. The parsley, chives and thyme is, also, freshly grown in crocks on my patio.

History of Kiwi Fruit

Back in 1904, Isabel Frazer, the headmistress of the Wanganui Girl’s College, brought back kiwi seeds to New Zealand.

Then the kiwi fruit was introduced in 1959, to the United States. The first batch of seeds to the United States were all male trees, so they didn’t produce edible fruit.

Kiwi fruit can be green or golden each with a different taste. Golden kiwi fruit’s flesh is yellow and has a small core with fewer seeds than the green kiwi fruit. I think it tastes a little like peaches.

This fruit needs lots of sun and water plus fertile soil. For this reason, kiwi are grown in New Zealand, California, Italy, France, Greece and Chile.

Is the Skin Edible?

Surprisingly yes, however, please wash well before eating the kiwi’s skin. The skin has lots of fiber.

I actually tired some of the skin. It reminds me a little like eating a potato skin. Some people like it and others not so much.

Ending Notes

I enjoyed eating my healthy fruit, vegetable and herb salad. The fruit, also, makes a great dessert when served raw.
