How to Make a Faux Stick of Butter

Years ago, farm fresh butter was pressed into a vintage butter press, pushed out and then chilled.  The end result was a large pat of butter with a fancy design pressed into the top.

A butter press was made out of wood and had a plunger like press.  Usually there was a design carved into it in to make a design on the pat of butter.  See the below photographs of the mini wooden butter press.

Now a day, we have a regular stick of butter, very utilitarian looking, nothing fancy.

Directions for Making a Faux Stick or Pat of Butter

To make a faux stick or pat of butter you will need about two to three bags of white or yellow Crayola Model Magic clay.

Kneed the clay together and work on a piece of wax paper.  Press the clay into a rectangular shape like a stick of butter.

I decided to make my clay to look like a faux vintage pat of butter.  The star design actually came from the bottom of my glass banana dish.  I thought it looked like a possible wood carving.  I used three bags of white Crayola Model Magic and then pressed the bottom my dish into the clay.

If you used yellow Crayola Clay Magic you might not need to paint your butter pat.

I am going to paint my white butter pat a light yellow color since farm fresh butter is only slightly yellow in color.

Allow the clay projects to thoroughly dry before painting with acrylic paint.
