Farmhouse Christmas

Farmhouse Christmas

It’s that time of year for candy canes, holiday trees, making stockings, and the Farmhouse Christmas. Yes, today’s blog is on things we do to make the historic farmhouse festive and true to the 1930’s time period.

So yesterday, the farmhouse historian and a couple of volunteers got together to decorate the historic Farmhouse. The house dates back to about 1895, so a lot of holiday celebrations have gone by.

I, always, enjoy decorating the farmhouse for the holidays.

Decorating the Parlor

The parlor is the old-fashioned name for a living room. First, the artificial holiday tree is put up almost in the center of the room. The tree is recycled since it was taken out of some of the donations we get at the farm. However, it’s a perfect size for the room–not too tall or too small. Yesterday, I forgot to put the string of lights on first. Then we wrap the tree in strings of faux popcorn and cranberries. Lastly, the ornaments are wired onto the tree. No, we don’t have all vintage ornaments, but we have some that look vintage, so we put those on. Lastly, we have a set of matching faux candy canes which are placed on some of the branches.

An unfinished quilt is placed over the rocking chair’s back. The mantle is decorated with pine corns, artificial greenery, and a few holiday bulbs.

This year, the farmwife is making her holiday stockings in the parlor but sometimes she makes them in the dining room. We have old brown stockings we pretend to stuff with oranges, tangerines, nuts, and a candy cane. Of course, all the items are faux but look quite real.

It took a few holidays to find realistic looking candy canes and the small tangerines. Although you can readily find oranges in craft stores, the tangerines were found in an upscale garden shop.

Easy Decorating – Dining Room

The dining room is always easy to decorate since the Thanksgiving turkey is taken off the table and the faux ham takes its place. The table is already set up.

We have a few vintage holiday cards we place out. Then we usually put out a vintage nutcracker and nutpicks on a back table.

Farmhouse Christmas – Decorating the Kitchen

Some of the vintage items from Thanksgiving are removed from the table and put away. Then we add our chocolate cake roll, perhaps a few faux cookies, and this year some faux dried fruit. Although, I think it was mentioned that we are going to show some vintage Jello molds.

Ending Comments – Farmhouse Christmas

As always, I hope you enjoyed our blog on decorating the historic farmhouse for Christmas. I know I did.

Note Vintage Shopping List – Vintage glass (Depression Glassware) Candle holders and a large vintage looking platter or tray to hold the chocolate cake roll – Rectangle size will work.

Notes Regarding Photographs on Farmhouse Christmas Blog

None of today’s photos were taken of the historic farmhouse or items in the historic farmhouse. The items are all from my holiday collection.

  • The first photograph of a silver snowflake is actually a gift tag from many years ago.
  • The red, silver, and green bell wreath is hanging on my kitchen wall and was purchased secondhand years ago.
  • I made the white painted wooden snowflake on a ribbon. Glittery gems were glued on along with a few bright beads.
  • Mini Floral Sled was found after Christmas in the floral section of a supermarket. Often you can get some great deals on floral ribbon, pots, floral picks or other items in a store’s floral sales area. I added the green napkin, bulbs, and red poinsettia blooms to get the look I wanted. I, also, have a large gold floral sled on my dining room table. However, they don’t match but that’s the beauty of the season. No matching required.
