I’ve always had issues with my fall fireplace mantel décor and this year decided to try a new approach. Since my fireplace is made of dark red bricks, I wanted to lighten up things a bit. So, while shopping at my local ReStore, I noted a set of small white shutters which looked about perfect for my project.
Also, the price was right for only $5 for the two connecting shutters.
Repurposing the Folding Shutters
This is how my white wooden shutters came from the ReStore Shop. They were connected by two hinges. However, the screws on the hinges were stripped, so to get the shutter apart, we used a hacksaw.
I had a little help cutting off the hinges. It is OK to have a few imperfections in the shutters to give it a used look. I left on the one wooden knob.
Putting Together the Fall Fireplace Mantel Display
So, this is the look I have so far. Of course, I dusted the mantel and large mirror before beginning.
First, I put a natural cotton decorative garland down the center of the mantel. Then in the middle of the mantle, I added a grape vine and mini pumpkin wreath. I had purchased this wreath secondhand last year.
Now, the two separated shutters were leaned against the brick wall. Then the faux white and orange pumpkins were carefully stacked. The large white pumpkin is a Cinderella faux pumpkin from Pottery Barn. It was, also, purchased at a great sales price.
The last thing I added was a few battery powered mini candles.
More Decorative Features to Follow
While looking at my mantel, still it seemed missing something. I asked my neighbor about it. She is a local artist and is very good with decorating and colors.
She said I need some faux fall leaves draped over the top of the shutters to tie the top into the bottom. Wow, I think that is a great idea! I might also add another secondhand shutter of a different size and color. Hum m m m. . .
Then, of course, it will be almost done but I still want to add some fairy lights to the finished project.
I’ll keep my Farmhouse Magic Blog Readers updated on things.
And, as always, Happy Fall Decorating!
