Veterans Day

Early Veterans Day

Today I thought I would write an Early Veterans Day blog. This day honors all the brave veterans who sacrificed to serve our great country. Some servicemen and women returned home but, unfortunately, others did not.

Church Service & Reception

Because of Veterans Day, we attended a service and reception at a local church. As the veterans entered the church, they were escorted to a reserved front pew by the school children.

During the service, mention was made of the veterans and a patriotic song sung by the children’s chorus.

Favorite Hat of a US Marine

Special US Marine

Before I left for the service, I put this old hat in my purse to take with me to honor a special retired US Marine. However, he passed away years ago.

The above photograph shows it sitting on a church wooden pew next to my purse.

He frequently wore this skeleton head hat, always had a US Flag flying in front of his house, and was proud to serve our country in the US Marine Corps. Surprisingly, he was not a US born citizen.

By the way, muerto means dead in Spanish.

Reception at Early Veterans Day Service

After the mass, the veterans and their spouses were invited to a reception in the church’s hall. Coffee, cookies, fruit, donuts, quiche slices and other treats were served.

There was both regular coffee and decaf coffee. It is only a small detail but it took some thought to do it. By the way, the decaf coffee was excellent.

The serving tables had white cloth tablecloths on them with red, white and blue half circle flags decorating the tables. The other tables were covered with red paper tablecloths.

We talked briefly to a person who was in the Coast Guard but most people were Army veterans.

Some of the children were hosts and talked to each person asking them about their military service. That was especially nice since some of the attendees were alone.

Ending Notes on Early Veterans Day Blog

The school children made special thank you cards and handed one out to each veteran.

So, we enjoyed the church’s special service, reception and thank you card.

In conclusion, this is a wonderful way to show appreciation and to remember our military men and women. We try to attend it every year.

Happy Veterans Day!
