Desk Redo was on my list of things to accomplish last weekend. To be honest, my desk area was a total mess. I needed to set things up, get organized, declutter and clean things up.
This photograph shows my desk before the redo.
Secondhand Desk, Just Right!
I only have a very small area to set up my “command central” in. There are already two other desks in the room, so the third desk size is very important.
I shopped for my desk only in secondhand venues as I didn’t want to spent a lot of money on the project. If you remember in a earlier blog, I found this plain secondhand desk which was about perfect. The desk also had a small drawer to store extra items.
In pulling out the desk drawer, I noticed there were a couple of screws missing from the sides. I found two screws in our toolbox that would work and so now the desk drawer is sturdy.
Adding a small resin decoration to the front desk drawer, makes the desk stand out. The secondhand resin decorative molding cost $2. The only issue is one part of the design was hanging below the bottom of the drawer. So, that part was carefully sawed off and then lightly sandpaper smoothed. You’ll only notice it if you get below the desk and look up.
Getting Organized in Desk Redo
The first thing I did was go out and buy a large cork bulletin board to hang on the wall behind the desk. I enlisted a helper to get the hanging brackets in the right place and to keep the bulletin board level. What is nice about this project is that company gave you a sample template to use which made things easier.

Ok, let’s see what is currently on my bulleting board. First, is a large calendar to keep track of dates, very important. No, I’m one of the few people who doesn’t go to my phone option for that one. There is, also, a schedule of local concerts, important memos and my blackout poetry sample.
On the top of my desk is a large secondhand crystal squirrel to hold my mini paper clothespins, a rack with the things I’m currently working on, plus other desk items.
Ending Notes of Desk Redo
I confess there are a few new things I had to buy for my desk like a small pencil sharpener, new black ink pens, and 3 x 5 in. size cards. Occasional, I like to draw with colored pencils that need to be regularly sharpened.
Initially, I had a boxful of papers that were useless, so they were recycled. For some reason, there was even a copy of a title of an old car I no longer own in that paper mess.
Because everything is now so organized, I find what I need. However, keeping things decluttered is always an effort for Farmhouse Magic Blog.
In the future, I also might stain my desk a darker color. But, that’s another day and, of course, another blog.
