Oh Christmas Tree!!!
For my Farmhouse Magic Blog readers, I thought I would share with you a photograph of my Christmas tree. I purchased my tree over the summer months since it was marked way down for a Christmas in July sale.
My tree is topped with a retro looking silver mercury blown glass tree topper. I believe this look was German in origin. In keeping with my trip to my favorite garden store, I also topped my tree with yards of white and silver wired ribbon tied into bows using green floral wire.
To keep my retro looking tree topper from falling off, I wired it to the upper tree branches with floral wire. I remember my mother having a similar looking red glass tree topper. Of course, being kids, we broke the bottom off at some point but she still used it.
My glass ornaments are colored mostly clear, bronze, off white or copper. On my tree, I also have a few vintage type ornaments from about the 1970’s and also some silver mercury finish mini bulbs.
When purchasing a new artificial tree be sure to keep in mind the space you wish to display it in.
My last artificial tree was too large for this space and I wasn’t able to put all the branches on it. I kept the limbless side to the back.
With this new slim-line tree, it looks great no matter which angle you view it from.
I also wanted this new tree to be tall but not so tall as I would have to get a ladder out to decorate it.
Christmas Tree with Retro Silver Topper
From a dollar store, I saved money by purchased the silver and clear plastic icicles although I always thought they looked more expensive than their real cost. The real beauty is that the inexpensive plastic icicles never break if they fall. I also have a few white wooden and plastic snowflakes scattered here and there.
I made the tree skirt with printed material from a sewing store. The binding on the edges is machine stitched.
The Retro Tree Topper was actually purchased years ago from Pottery Barn along with some of the silver retro mini bulbs.
As you can see I saved money on my spectacular tree by shopping for Christmas in July sales, mixing ornaments of various prices and sewing my own tree skirt.
