Old Freezer in Basement – A Life Saver!

If you have been reading my blog, I know what you are thinking.  Farmhouse Magic Blog, why do I have to buy so many things secondhand?  Well, of course, you don’t need to buy everything secondhand because there is also a “as Is” category which has a whole different meaning.

Over two decades ago, I purchased my home and it came with an “as Is” freezer in the basement.  Guess what, it is still working fine and keeps things frozen.  When compared to my expensive refrigerator/freezer in my kitchen, my “as is” freezer really beats it as far as quality goes.  My kitchen freezer/refrigerator has a problem with broken shelves which constantly need to be replaced.  It also is not sufficiently insulated between the two sections because if I put an item too close to the center, it is going to freeze.  OK for some items but not for most.

Every five years or so, I defrost my freezer but I’m always afraid that it will not start up again.

As you can see, I don’t have much in it—a bag of ice, a large ham, and a bag of flour.  If I am going to have a party, I can freeze several boxes of cookies or ice cubes in my freezer.  This summer I can, also, freeze my extra garden grown tomatoes.

So, let’s not discount the “as is” element of shopping.  Perhaps I use too much energy to keep my freezer running but I’ll think about that in about another decade or so.

Update on Old Freezer – 11-4-2020 – A Life Saver!

I’ve been in the coronavirus pandemic for so long now.  I pushed the old freezer into service.

It has actually been an huge asset to me in survival as I can load what ever food purchases I have into it for storage.  I don’t know when the meat supplies will get skimpy again or some other things I need to survive.  By filling this freezer up with food, it helps ease my mind.

I, also, only have so much room for food storage upstairs.

This old freezer still needs to be defrosted but with it stuffed with food, I am hoping it will outlast the pandemic.

Thank you “as is” freezer!
