Drought Tolerant Irises

Drought Tolerant Irises

So, it is back to the drought tolerant irises on the side of my house. This part of my house is shaded by my neighbor’s large maple trees. So, it only gets partial sun during the summer months.

However, my neighbor trimmed back some of her large maple tree branches that were near my home, so now the area gets a little more sunshine.

With more sunshine, I noted a few lovely yellow irises in full bloom and thought this space could be more.

A wonderful thing is that these drought tolerant irises need very little water over the summer months. In fact, my garden hose does not reach this area, so these iris plants have to pretty much make it on their own. They have been in this area over 30 years, so they are very hardy.

New Gardening Plan

Previously, I did a blog on giving away some of these iris plants to thin out the area. However, after a bit of thought about the now blooming irises, I’m going to keep them but space them out a bit.

The first thing we did was to pull up all the weeds in the iris flower bed. There were also quite a few weedy vines growing on the split rail fencing which were, also, removed.

Note, we missed a few vines and weeds in the iris flower bed. We’ll need to weed again at some point.

Drought Tolerant Plans

The iris plants have grown too far into the yard, so it makes running the lawn mower more difficult. The wayward plants were removed with a shovel and replanted in the previously weeded spot.

OK, I admit I have these iris plants planted a bit too deep as the rhizomes on the roots should be half showing. I’m allowing them to grow a bit and then I’ll try to adjust their thick rhizome roots closer to the soil’s surface.

It would be a nice surprise if these iris plants bloom this year. That way, I’ll know what color they are.

I previous poured a gallon of plant food over the new plantings and hopefully they will all survive this summer’s heat.

Closing Notes on Drought Tolerant Irises

I’m going to keep an eye on these newly transplanted iris rhizomes. I’ll even give a dash of water until they are rooted.

For now, I’ll keep my Readers up to date on my latest grand gardening adventures.

Happy Diggin’ in the Dirt to All the Gardeners Out There!
