Unable to resist, Farmhouse Magic Blog purchased a boxed cake mix on sale and, yes, it was a 50 cents cake. Of course, that only represents what I paid for the boxed mix. To make the cake, you needed, 4 large eggs, 6 tablespoons of melted butter and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
Making the 50 Cents Cake
I brought the cake mix home and immediately made it. It was only good until Sept. 20, 2025. If I tossed it in my cabinet, I was sure to forget about it and in the end would have to toss it out.
I followed the instructions on the box. Except, I added 1/4 cup of coffee to the mixture and a fourth of cup less water.
On the box, there is a notation about it containing rich Dutch cocoa in the mix. However, I only noted cocoa power in the ingredients. I’m not sure what makes cocoa a Dutch cocoa? Plus, there are some other natural flavors in the mix.
On the box there is a photograph of a pretty nice looking chocolate cake with chocolate curls decorating the top. Apparently there is some “Down Home Quality” to this boxed cake mix.

After making the cake and it cooled, I added my own twist on homemade icing. I used powered sugar, butter, about a half cup of premium melted chocolate chips and a little bit of milk to smooth out the icing. Sorry Readers, I’ll have to give you the exact ingredients another time. (Note: I’m in a rush to finish this blog since I have a volunteer assignment today).
Taste Test
The cake has a chocolate taste to it. It was definitely worth the sale price of 50 cents. I also like my homemade chocolate frosting on it. Although, I see you can buy a can of the store frosting, too.
Ending Notes
In conclusion, it was nice to eat a slice of chocolate cake made with a deeply discounted box of mix.
However, boxed cakes always seem to taste a little eggy to me. But, of course, that is probably expected since it takes four eggs to make this cake. I, also, like lots of flavor in anything I eat.
So until my next shopping trip, my bargain priced chocolate cake was a real deal.
