Broad-Headed Skink

Broad-Headed Skink Broad-Headed Skink

This photograph shows a Broad-Headed Skink sunning itself on my patio steps.

To identify this creature, I checked the online photographs from a herpetology web site.

The Broad-Headed Skink grows about 6.5 to 12.75 inches long.

Apparently this lizard bites but it is not venomous.

Interesting to note, if a skink is attacked by a predator it will lose its tail.  This gives the skink time to get away.  The tail will regrow back but it will not be as long as the original one.

Broad-Headed Skinks are very quick and have good eye sight.  This allows them catch insects and other smaller lizards for food.

It’s illegal to keep Broad-Headed Skinks as pets.

I think I like kittens better anyway.

Bonus Photograph

I decided to add one more photograph to this blog.

I have posed my red clay lizard in the same location as the Broad-Headed Skink.

This red clay lizard “lives” near my fireplace and is very detailed.

He is missing the tip of his tail, but that’s OK with me.  No doubt he had a close call at his last home.

He was purchased in a second hand charity store and is very heavy.
