Blooming Orchids & Purchasing Tips

Yellow and White Orchids Yellow and White Orchids

I thought I would add a blog about my visit to Merrifield Garden’s greenhouse which was overflowing with blooming orchids.

The photograph on the left, shows some yellow and white orchids in boom.

I would like to recommend to my Readers a book entitled The Orchid Thief  by Susan Orlean.

The Orchid Thief  is a true story of a journalist who investigates the 1994 arrest of a passionate orchid collector accused of poaching the rare Ghost Orchid found in the swamps of South Florida.  His goal was to clone the rare orchid for profit.

If you look at a photograph of the Ghost Orchid in bloom, it is absolutely stunning.   The orchid is white with two long petal tails.

Any orchid enthusiast will understand the obsession with collecting specimens of the hauntingly beautiful Ghost Orchid.

These tall yellow orchids are supported with sticks to keep the blooms upright.

These photographs do not give justice to one the world’s most glorious flowers–the orchid.

Each orchid bloom is overwhelmingly perfect in all ways.

Unfortunately, I do have not a photograph posted of the rare Ghost Orchid.

This is a close up of beautiful pink orchids in full bloom in one of Merrifield Garden Center’s greenhouses.

Orchid Buying Tips

While out shopping for a orchid to be given as a gift, I ran into another shopper who gave me some purchasing tips.

I thought I would share them with my readers.

Always buy an orchid with flower buds still attached so you can watch the blooms open.  Try to buy an orchid with two stems so that way you are really getting two orchids.

The orchid’s leaves should look green and not have any brown spots on them.

Check out the orchid’s roots and make sure they look new and fresh, certainly not dust covered.

Avoid buying orchids wrapped in plastic.
