I decided to administer some cutting board care to items in my kitchen. In particular, my cutting boards, cheese boards, and spoon handles were a bit dry looking.
I never place these items in the dish washer, nor do I allow them to soak in water. I handwash them off, dry them and then put away.
On my last shopping trip, I, also, picked up a good used spatula in the secondhand store for 50 cents. It has a slight crack in the wooden handle which I am going to see if I can improve.
I know cracks can let in bacteria, so I don’t want to use it if the crack doesn’t look improved.

This a good orange spatula from a well-known kitchen supply store. It is permanently fixed on a wooden handle.
Let’s see if we can make the small crack seem less noticeable and extend the life of the spatula.
Cutting Board Maintenance
Thinking it is time for a quick blog on this topic, I decided to give a few tips.
First of all, there is a variety of polishes, oils and waxes that are made to care for cutting boards. It is up to you to select one to use. However, I would check to make sure what you use is food grade and nontoxic, since the items are in contact with food.
Underneath the wooden handled utensils is my new olive wood cheese board I recently purchased at the outlet. It has gorgeous wood markings which run through the board. Note – That’s another blog.
Application Tips
- Clean and dry the cutting board
- Apply generously
- Allow to absorption as per directions
- Wipe off Excess
- Reapply regularly for a smooth, nourished board. Proper maintenance prevents cracks and splits, warping and bacterial comtamination.

Ending Notes of Cutting Board Care
I’ve been a bit lax with the care of cutting boards. They are quite dry looking; however, they do not have any cracks in them.
So hopefully, with some regular care, I can get them in better shape. I see one source recommending polishing them once a month.
OK, we will see on that one.
