Ok, holiday commercialism is a mouthful to say but I think this is an important blog topic. This week I went out shopping for a simple pair of bedroom slippers. Believe it or not, they were difficult to find, or I didn’t like what they had in store, or they were too expensive.
I began to see what I would call holiday commercialism in the stores. These are things that perhaps you want but might not be needed. Or if gifted, not even used by the recipient. Right now, the stores are full of holiday themed merchandise and shoppers. They have virtually something for everyone on your shopping list but please shop carefully and evaluate what you are spending money on.
I found a pair of slippers I liked and then waited in a checkout line with approximately eight to ten shoppers in front of me.
So, here are some of things I found in the store as I waited in that long line.
French Fry Holder
I noted a French fry holder made out of plastic I believe it was for car use. I guess this is for a frequent French fry eater. Somehow you clipped it to an edge of the dashboard, I think.
Day of the Dead Cookies
In this kit you decorated cookies with Day of the Dead skeleton heads. This is probably a left item over from Halloween. But I’m not sure if it was on sale or not. It was next to a gingerbread house decorating kit, so I guess the cookies are edible once you have them decorated.
Holiday Pine Tree Shaped Dish Scrubber
The next item is a holiday tree shaped dish scrubber. This item came with two scrubbers shaped as holiday pine trees.
Since I like holiday themed dish towels this was a cute idea for the housewife with everything who likes to scrub dishes.
Playing Cards Shaped Like Beer Cans
I’m not sure what these playing cards are like as they are still in the package. However, it seems to me that you could memorize all the aces, etc., in a deck if you know what beer can picture is on them. This is probably a No-Go for a Vegas gambling table but could be fun playing with friends or family.
Leggy Night Light
The next item I noticed is a night light for ages 14 and up. Not sure how many teenagers still need a night light but OK on that on. This looks like the leggy version of the lamp from A Christmas Story. That’s a great classic holiday film but I don’t really get the night light version.
Artificial Snowballs
This set of artificial snowballs is a cute idea for indoor snowball fights. Each snowball looks like a giant yarn pom-pom. Personally, I enjoy a good snowball fight with real snowballs. But, as things go, there might not be a white holiday season, so you get to improvise as needed with this soft snowball set.
Ending Blog on Holiday Commercialism & Saving Money
I love the Thanksgiving holiday since it is all about a nice turkey dinner with all the trimmings. One doesn’t need to be concerned about gift giving or experience any holiday commercialism. Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for family, friends, and all the good things in life.
As for holiday shopping rush coming up, things can take on a holiday commercialism vibe only if you let them.
Remember to shop early and wisely for gifts making every dollar count. Upcoming Event – Happy Black Friday Everyone!
