Every year I try to attend a special Veteran’s Celebration open to all veterans at a private venue. What one sees is a genuine thank you to all that have served our country.
There is generally a pretty good turnout of veterans from those being very young to those being very old. Some bring their wives.
There was lots of singing but the ending song is always the best as it goes, “Thank you, oh thank you. . .” It tells of children that are safe in their beds at night and other examples of how they are grateful. It’s not a song that anyone has probably heard before, but it is exactly what they should sing.
Veteran’s Celebration Refreshments
The reception room is is set up with a long table of cookies, crackers, and fresh fruit. There is coffee, iced water, and lemonade to drink. Also, and get this since it is near impossible to find in coffee shops, an urn of decaffeinated coffee. I can never figure out why certain well-known coffee shops don’t serve decaffeinated coffee.
But back to the Veteran’s Day Celebration, the decorations on the table are flags, flowers and bits of red, white and blue.
During the reception, hosts will stop by to ask you what branch of the service you were in. This is great because some people came by themselves and it is nice to have someone come by for a chat.
Thank You Cards and Booklets
Everyone attending is given a handmade thank you card and booklet. These are fun to look at because each is individually done. No two thanks you cards are alike.
Ending Notes on Veteran’s Celebration
Well, of course, it is not quite Veteran’s Day, but it is so nice that our veterans are treated in a special way a few days early.
So, what do I bring with me to this event? I always try to remember to bring this worn out old hat which was worn by a vet. He was a tough US Marine and this hat said it all. Of course, this was his favorite hat and he wore it all the time.
Happy Veteran’s Day to all American Vets. Thank you for your service and for keeping us safe!
